“Gentleman, gentleman, no need to fuss over who’s the better guitarist.” This statement I find myself making in the midst of many a creative Guitar Hero debates. After all we’re talking about comparing apples to oranges. No scratch that, more like pears to bananas. It’s a whole different kind of animal….well, fruit in this case. No wait, I mean guitar players! Ah, that’s better. Ok but back to my point: Let’s remember that Not All Guitarists Were Created Equal.
Whether you prefer the fire and passion of Hendrix and Stevie Ray, or the focused touch of ole Slowhand, the lyrical bop lines of Wes or Metheny, or blistering shredders such as Vai, Malmsteen and Buckethead, they’re all different!
That’s the beauty of the instrument. With so many facets to it’s identity, it allows for a vast assortment of tastes to be satiated. Think about it. How many other instruments are quite as versatile? Piano for instance….though it is beautiful in it’s own right, you can’t bend notes or apply vibrato. These techniques of course are just a few of the characteristics that give the guitar it’s unique quality. Not to mention the fact that in the hands of each distinct individual, it takes on their identity and mirrors their journey with the timbre that they draw from the axe they’re slinging. So please, no more rantings about who has the best technique or tone etc…Let’s just all enjoy our favorite players and continue to celebrate the instrument in all of it’s varietal splendor!

Amen! Very few instruments are are expressive as guitar, and three chords from the fingers of a player with SOUL will soar over all the technicality in the world.
I celebrate the differences: and am glad to get to play nice guitars!
